ENGINEERED HARDWOOD FLOORING
A quick diagram showcasing the process and result of engineered floors
Plain Sawn also known as Flat Sawn - This type is the most common and least expensive. The result includes a cathedral like pattern on the face of the board.
Quarter Sawn - This one is slightly more expensive than Plain Saw. It contains a straight grain pattern along the board allowing for easier design and alignment. Red Oak and White Oak species will chow off greater amounts of spots known as “flecks” throughout the board. Other species will showcase less flecking.
Rift Sawn - The most expensive and least common. The highlights of the rift sawn include a linear grain pattern throughout the board with no spots or flecking. It is a very stable wood and provides a pleasing linear appearance.

Rift & Quarter Sawn
The skills of quarter sawing makes hardwood floors unique. The vertical grain produced in rift & quarter sawn lumber is often sought after due to its unusual technical properties and, of course, appearance.
- is dimensionally stable thanks to expansion and contraction vertically and evenly,
- it’s much harder than plain sawn flooring, also wears evenly. That’s the best option for flooring in high traffic areas.
- its vertical grain increases integrity in wood construction
- due to stability, it is a good choice for tasks related to thermal radiation
- incredibly beautiful patterns of grains make people still covet it
Other equally interesting options: Townsend lumber, L.W mountain, Sommerset, and Appalachian. All equally beautiful are available at low, affordable prices.
